1. Conyers Defers Contempt Charge on AG

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, the Michigan
Democrat, decided to defer the vote scheduled for Wednesday on a
resolution finding Attorney General Mukasey in contempt after
receiving a letter from the Bush Justice Department.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. has decided
to defer the vote scheduled for today [Wed., Sept. 10]  in the
committee on a resolution finding Attorney General Mukasey in
contempt for failing to comply with a committee subpoena for
documents. Attached is a letter [see left bar] from the Justice
Department received last night that provided additional documents
and accommodations to the committee and asked for such a deferral,
and today's letter [see left bar] from the chairman agreeing to defer
the matter but stressing the importance of reaching agreement
promptly on production of the remaining subpoenaed documents.
