1.AGs backing Siegelman mostly Dems
By George Altman Capital Bureau Mobile Press Register
...."It's an awesome statement," said Robert Abrams, former
Democratic attorney general of New York. "Never before, in the
history of this nation, have former attorneys general banded together
in unity before the courts of this country in such great number."
Abrams and others added that the party affiliations of Siegelman's
supporters reflects the tendency for more Democrats than
Republicans to be elected to the office. Of the 50 sitting state
attorneys general, 32 are Democrats and 18 are Republicans,
according to the National Association of Attorneys General.
They also said that many politicians appoint friends and contributors
to positions, and that criminalizing such action would discourage
potential candidates and campaign donors. Hubbard agreed that
many politicians appoint allies, but said it becomes a crime when
there's some sort of compensation in return — a quid pro quo.

2. Why Did Feds Persecute Celebrity Expert
Cyril Wecht? Who's Next?
By Andrew Kreig DC journalist and attorney for Huffington Post
Like many government employees, Allegheny County Coroner Dr.
Cyril Wecht of Pittsburgh sometimes sent faxes from his office on
personal matters. On Feb. 12, 2002, for example, he sent a New
Jersey group a bill for a speech.
Four years later, the Justice Department used that fax for one of 84
felony charges against Wecht, thereby forcing his resignation after 20
years. The charges included 27 felonies for sending personal faxes,
along with allegations over mileage vouchers, office stationary,
permission for students to study autopsies, and requests for staff help.
Nationally, more than 95% of those who are federally accused in the U.
S. now plead guilty. But Wecht, widely known as a TV analyst on
celebrity deaths, had the means to fight hard to clear his name and
stay out of prison.

3. Department of Justice Pulls a Whitewash
on Siegelman Whistleblower
By Roger Shuler for Legal Schnauzer
....OSC's report is dubious on its face. It fails to address perhaps
Grimes' two most serious allegations--that U.S. Attorney Leura Canary
remained involved with the case after her supposed recusal and that
prosecutors pressured witnesses to remember events a certain way.
It is interesting to note that those two charges can clearly be
substantiated--the first with e-mail evidence that Grimes provided to
the Department of Justice, the second with similar accounts from a
number of other individuals. Is that why OSC did not want to touch
those issues? Does that raise questions about the validity of OSC's
entire investigation?
The report becomes even more dubious when you consider OSC's
recent history. Federal agents raided the office of former OSC chief
Scott J. Bloch in May 2008 amid allegations of improper political bias
and obstruction of justice. The New York Times reported that agents
were trying to determine if Bloch, a 2003 George W. Bush appointee,
had hired an outside firm to scrub his computer.

Whistle Blower Tamara Grimes was fired from her job. "I have always considered myself to be a moderate Republican,” she said. “I believe in the U.S. Constitution, and that what happened in Montgomery with the Siegelman/Scrushy prosecution is a travesty of justice."
