1. Prosecution & Politics: Sue Schmitz Trial
Begins
NewsChannel 19's Greg Privett reports

The trial for Alabama district 6 Representative Sue Schmitz starts
Monday.

U.S. Attorney Alice Martin's office has charged the Democrat with
fraud claiming Schmitz did not earn wages paid by the Alabama's 2-
year college system. Prosecutors allege in their indictment that
Schmitz, over three years, collected $177,000 without doing enough
work.

Schmitz has steadfastly insisted she is innocent.

The government is under fire for potentially playing politics with the
Schmitz case.

On January 31, federal agents arrested Schmitz at her home in
Toney. A task force including five federal agents showed up at
Schmitz' home at 6:15 a.m. The early morning raid came as the 63-
year-old retired school teacher was taking a shower. The agents
allegedly dragged Schmitz out of her bathroom, handcuffed her, and
hauled her away.

The trial will be in Decatur.
