....We readily admit: Some of the concerns about partisanship under
Bush are well-founded. Internal Justice Department probes have
found politics tainted some hiring and firing decisions in the agency -
including the dubious dismissals of several U.S. attorneys who didn't
handle politically charged criminal cases in a way that suited
Republican interests. Justice officials' boneheaded conduct
undermines public confidence that prosecution decisions were being
made based solely on the law.
Some public officials in Alabama quickly seized on these stories as
proof their legal troubles were politically motivated. Most notably,
former Gov. Don Siegelman blamed White House machinations for his
public corruption prosecution. His claims were much heralded by
some Democratic members of Congress, including Davis....
