1.Editorial: Riley’s folly
Editorial in Dothan Eagle

Virtually every year, we hear a variation on a jarring statistic about our
state’s underfunded Department of Public Safety. In the overnight
hours, we hear that Alabama’s state roadways are patrolled by only
four, six or eight state troopers, depending on who’s doing the talking.

Early Friday, there were hundreds of state troopers on the road. But
they weren’t patrolling; under the direction of Gov. Bob Riley and his
Task Force on Illegal Gambling, the state officers were preparing to
raid two lawful gaming businesses — Country Crossing in Houston
County south of Dothan and Victoryland’s Quincy Triple Seven in
Macon County — electronic bingo parlors operating under
constitutional amendments legalizing the gaming in their respective
counties.

2. Milton McGregor: John Tyson asked me
for $150,000 during 2006 campaign
By George Altman for Mobile Press Register/Al.com

....John Tyson Jr., the governor's new gambling czar, in 2006 received
more than $200,000 in campaign money -- some of which Tyson's
campaign solicited -- from political action committees funded by
gambling interests, according to official records, three contributors
and Tyson's own campaign finance director.

"He specifically asked me for $150,000, and I told him that wasn't
possible, but I flat sure gave him $100,000, and he wanted more,"
said Milton McGregor, owner of the VictoryLand casino near
Montgomery.
