1. Riley Aide Threatens Christian Coalition
Leader Over Gambling
Roger Shuler for Legal Schnauzer

An associate of Alabama Governor Bob Riley threatened a Christian
Coalition leader over gambling issues, according to a lawsuit filed in
Montgomery County Circuit Court in May 2007.

Dr. Randy Brinson, chairman of the Christian Coalition of Alabama,
states in the lawsuit that he supported a bill in the Alabama House of
Representatives that would tax and regulate gambling and help fund
Medicaid. Brinson's support for the bill, sponsored by Rep. Marcel
Black (D-Tuscumbia), drew heavy fire from Riley allies.

2. Minor’s 5th Circuit appeals exhausted
by Anita Lee for the SunHerald.com

.... “In light of the panel’s denial for a rehearing, we will now appeal
the remaining part of Paul Minor’s convictions to the United States
Supreme Court.

Eastland said Minor’s legal team is “very encouraged” because the
Supreme Court already is questioning the constitutionalilty of the
fraud statue under which the three were convicted, honest services
fraud, or depriving the public of a judge’s honest services.

The remainder of the convictions standing against Minor and the
judges involve only the honest services fraud law. A jury found that
Minor secured loans for the two judges, and made payment on those
loans, to influence future decisions. Minor’s attorneys argue that
prosecutors failed to prove he offered the loans with any criminal
intent to buy official acts.
