The New York Times 5/1/07 “It appears they were looking for ways to get him.”

The government charged the pair with a crime that hasn't been a crime in Alabama, or anywhere.
Countless contributors to political campaigns end up holding some kind of public office just as Mr.
Scrushy did. Why did that activity suddenly become a crime in Alabama? The judge and prosecutors
saw beyond the law and convinced jurors the two committed a crime. The case smells of politics just
as the alleged political firing of the U.S. attorneys is troubling, so is this case because the suspicions
go to the heart of our system of self-governance. Congress should look beyond those firings and
into this case.

Bobo’s Indictment, Conviction Used In GOP Ads
|
Siegelman’s Republican Opponents Used Bobo In Campaign Ads. Windom ran a
political advertisement that attacked Siegelman for corruption. The ad said,
“Newspapers condemn Don Siegelman’s no-bid state contracts to campaign
contributors. Siegelman’s contributors convicted.” [Steve Windom Television Ad,
“Mad”, 1/24/02]

Republicans Made Investigation Centerpiece Of Campaign
Riley Attacked Siegelman For ‘Corruption’. “A second GOP gubernatorial candidate,
U.S. Rep. Bob Riley, R-Ashland, also slammed the governor. ‘They say “Where there
is smoke, there is fire,” and our state government is choking on a lot of smoke right
now,’ Riley said in a written statement. ‘Like all Alabamians, I'm tired of all the
scandals and embarrassing things our state leaders do from time to time. It's time to
clean that place up.’” [MR, Owen, 2/12/02]
Riley Made Ethics Central Issue In Campaign. “U.S. Rep. Bob Riley, another
Republican seeking Siegelman’s job, has started television commercials that do not
mention Siegelman by name but mention the climate in the capital. ‘As governor I’ll
clean up Montgomery and end the corruption,’ Riley said, mentioning ‘sweetheart’
no-bid contracts.” [TN, Beyerle, 2/12/02]

What Did Republicans Do With Information Leaked From Investigation?
|
Jeff Sessions, A Republican Candidate For Attorney General, Planned Smear
Campaign Against Folsom Using The FBI’s Resources, Both To Help His Own
Campaign And Fob James, A Republican Running Against Folsom.
“The meeting, admitted to by both Turner and Sessions, lasted three to four hours.
Sessions tells Turner that the FBI in Mobile is interested in investigating Folsom,
particularly Folsom’s Cayman Island trip. Sessions wants any information on Gov.
Folsom which can help him in the Attorney General’s race. It is Sessions’ political
strategy to attack Evans for not investigating Gov. Folsom, thus fostering the
misconception that Evans was trying to “cover up” for Gov. Folsom, the major theme
of Sessions’ Campaign.”

Islands Trip By James E. Folsom, Jr., Motion To Disqualify Attorney General Jeff
Sessions, 7/29/96, Pg. 8]
